Junior Web Developer, UK

This is an opportunity to join a growing company based in the heart of the Cambridge Cluster, serving a global customer base in the life sciences sector. Cresset is a dynamic organization with a track record of delivering outstanding scientific software, with a strong focus on user experience.

We are seeking an enthusiastic junior web developer to work on building state-of-the-art tools for drug design and data analysis for the pharmaceutical industry. This role provides broad exposure across full-stack web development, dev-ops, and product specification and project planning, with opportunities to specialize in areas of interest.


  • Foundational development experience across one or more web programming languages
  • Experience of Python, Javascript (for the web and/or NodeJS), contemporary frontend frameworks (VueJS, React, Angular), version control (git), Linux environments, and containerized deployment (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong passion and desire to develop exceptional web applications and a drive to develop holistically across web and product development
  • Candidates should be able to present any Open Source or other shareable examples of personal, educational, or professional project web sites/apps
  • Experience in a commercial environment or educated to degree level in computer science or similar
  • Background/interest in chemistry


Within three months:

  • Become familiar with the architecture of our application and our stack:
    • Python / Django / GraphQL backend
    • VueJS frontend
    • Deployment with Docker on AWS (Linux/EC2)
  • Take an elementary crash course in computational chemistry, our business domain
  • Contribute to the applications success by writing simple, business-relevant plugins with front and backend elements using our application’s plugin-based architecture
  • Be working in, and gaining proficiency with, Linux environments

Within six months:

  • Comfortable working on features and bug fixes for existing parts of the codebase collaboratively with senior developers
  • Continually exposed to and participating in:
    • Project planning and specification
    • Kanban-style agile software development lifecycle
    • Continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) with GitLab
    • Creating and managing cloud infrastructure on AWS

Within twelve months:

  • Be confident working independently within the codebase
  • Take ownership of larger back and frontend plugins and components
  • Have some familiarity with Cresset desktop software and Python APIs
  • Have competence with computational chemistry toolkits
  • Be an active, reciprocal participant in product specification and code review
  • Engage with users and customers to deliver and improve the product
