Cresset provides solutions for computational and medicinal chemists working on the creation of new medicines through the interaction of small molecule drugs with biological targets. We have developed a range of applications that use our cutting edge science to derive excellent results in easy to use applications for desktop and enterprise computing infrastructures.

A simple request from a valued user seemed straightforward to satisfy. Had we done so we would have taken away one of our most popular products and removed a key market. Customer requests and ideas provide a substantial proportion of our development work but it is always important to think bigger than the request itself.

We review how our most popular product, Spark, started from a customer idea and evolved according to customer requests. We will focus on lessons learned and show how a small software company can compete against those that are many times our size. We also show one of the benefits of being small, in that we had the knowledge across the business and the decision-making flexibility to answer the simple request with a creative solution.
